If you where to extract revenge on the enemy that defiled your sister, how would you proceed? Would you defeat them by strength, deception, superior intellect and technology? Or, the use of bio-warfare? Instead of the customary throwing of rocks, maybe throw rabid gophers?
Would you strategically cut off all of the enemies supply lines and air drop FREE coupons for Little Caesar’s pizza on them and launch smart-bombs, laser-guided at their pepperoni’s?
Or would you use the very thing that defiled her, the male body part that sometimes thinks separately from the brain, as a means to outwit the dimwits.
Hebrew dogs of war know. They know beyond anyone who thinks they know. The Pentagon would be wise to take notes.
How does one take down an entire tribe without a shot being fired, or a weapon of mass destruction launched from 1000 miles away?
In Genesis 34:1-34 Jacob’s daughter Dinah is raped by a neighboring clan leaders son named Shechem. Shechem can’t live without her, and Jacob’s sons don’t want this rapist to live with her. She has been defiled and the offense is taken up apart from her father’s restraint.
Note: Unattached young woman were considered fair game in cities of the time. Promiscuity was part of the pagan religious system itself.
The Shechemites want the Hebrews to morph into their tribe, share everything and lose the autonomy God has directed them to keep. The Schechemites say: “Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it.”
Shechem will do anything that they ask for Dinah’s hand. This will be his demise.
This is not love, its unabated selfish ownership. Love does not start with rape. This is also reflective of the lowbrow nature of the Canaanites.
Jacob’s sons are shrewd, they devise a plan for the revenge of their sister’s defilement using the very thing that is a sign of their covenant with God: Circumcision.
The dimwitted Shechemites say sure let’s be circumcised and be just like them! They are seduced with the thought of more wives, cattle, donkeys and tribal expansion. They were greedy kingdom builders at their worst.
So all the men get circumcised and probably used crude methods at best. No Celebrex to be found. By the third day they were rendered incapacitated.
Simeon and Levi, deceptive and brutal, attacked the men at the most opportune time that deceit and disgrace could provide. At one hand, it was brilliant in strategy as the “Ites” were still moaning and groaning and heard saying “what were we thinking,” on the other hand, they defiled God’s intended covenant of circumcision.
Plunder and more plunder. The Hebrews ended up with the very things the “Ites” were willing to undergo the dull knife for,
and in turn received the sharp, life-ending blade.
While seemingly brilliant at war strategy, it was a darkened period for Jacob. His sons defiled with the same lack of morals Shechem used.
Exodus 20:5 “Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
This transitional command transcends time and is one of the ten God requires of us. Even if our father, or mother doesn’t seem to deserve honor, God always does.
